The Parting Glass…

This is a song I always love to listen to every time I remember that I’d have to die someday. I just hope and pray like everyone else that the day, whenever it is, would be at a time when I have fulfilled my calling on earth…. The lyrics go thus:

All the money that ‘ere I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that ‘ere I’ve done
Alas it was to none but me…
And all I’ve done for want of with..
Too many now, I can’t recall..
So fell to me, the parting glass
Good night, and Joy be with you all…

Oh all the comrades that ‘ere I’ve had,
I am sorry for my going away…
And all the sweethearts that ‘ere I’ve had,
Would wish me one more day to stay…
But since it falls unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I’ll gently rise and I’ll softly call,
Good night and Joy be with you all….

Very thoughtful words in my opinion. Death is something everyone would love to avoid thinking about, but in truth, we all would die someday. I believe that self evaluation is very important for every individual to undertake at this time in life. Especially with the recent happenings the world over. Wherever you might be tonight, whatever part of the world you might be, death is near you. It is near me… When do you reflect? People might think it weird that one would think of death, but the truth is it could claim anybody at anytime…. All we do is say “Not today” “Not today”….

What would people say about you when you die? Would you be celebrated amongst your peers? Or would the people around you be glad that you are gone? Would you leave the world “owing” a horde of people in different ways? Guys, would the several girls you have hurt rejoice at the news of your death? Girls would the various friends you have betrayed laugh and not pity you even in death?…. I believe its good to live good. No human being is perfect, but we can all strive to be good wherever we are. So when the time comes there’d be no debts to be paid, no regrets in life…..
